The Nutrition Science Academy is set for June 6-8 at Texas State University's School of Family & Consumer Sciences. Help us pack the courtroom with Extension volunteers - show the court our great volunteer corps! We’ll highlight volunteer impacts and present a check to the court for 2011 Hays County Extension Volunteer Efforts (over $350,000).

This is a great community service opportunity. Items may be dropped off at the Extension office on Wed., March 21 or delivered to St. John’s Catholic Church on the morning of March 22.

"Deep in the Heart" Movie

“Deep in the Heart” reveals the true-life story of Mr. Richard “Dick” Wallrath. No one person has ever given more financially to the Texas 4-H and Texas FFA Scholarship Programs than Dick Wallrath. He has also provided tremendous financial assistance to 4-H and FFA members through major livestock show premium auctions. Several Hays Co. 4-H members, volunteers, and parents attended the movie premiere on Feb. 15, saying it was a great movie. It is only showing at limited theaters, but may expand to more soon. HCLE Home Skills Survey & Committee Meeting

Anyone who has had any involvement with the Home Skills part of the Hays Co. Show is asked to complete a brief online survey to provide feedback about the show. Positive changes were made over the last year, but many more are certainly possible, but we need input from our 4-H and FFA families. Click here to provide your input. Please remember this survey is just about the Home Skills show, not the livestock portion of the show. If you have concerns or issues with the livestock show, please contact the board and/or each show's superintendent.

Also, the Home Skills Committee will meet on Wed., April 4, at 6:30 pm, at the Extension office to evaluate the 2012 show, review survey results, and start planning for the 2013 show. More adult volunteers are needed for this committee.

Major Livestock Show Steer Tag Validation Order

Now is the time to order your validation tag if you are planning on showing a steer at one of the major livestock shows. The major livestock shows include: State Fair, Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston, Star of Texas. This tag will also be accepted by the Hays County Livestock Show.

Validation will be held sometime in June. Tags must be ordered prior to then. Tags are $10 each. All orders are due to the Hays County Extension Office, along with payment, by close of business on April 9. No late orders will be accepted. No refunds granted once tags are ordered. 2012 Youth Range Workshop

The 58th consecutive annual workshop will be held on June 24 - June 29, 2012. Purpose of the Workshop is to recognize outstanding youth, develop leadership skills, and provide advanced training to 4-H and FFA youth interested in practical range ecology, ranch and natural resource management. A goal of the Workshop is that youth participants will return to their local communities and can serve as leaders to educate youth and other audiences about the value and management of the rangeland resource. The workshop will be conducted at the Texas Tech University – Junction, located in Junction, Texas. A total of 40 youth will be accepted to the 2012 Workshop.

For developing teen and junior leaders in range management, the Youth Range Workshop has served for the past 57 consecutive years as an excellent opportunity for Texas youth to receive training in range management, stewardship of natural resources and leadership. The Youth Range Workshop was first held at Junction in 1955. The 2012 Youth Range Workshop will provide 45 4-H and FFA youth from across the state with an intensive 6 days of hands-on training and learning by up to seventeen volunteer range professionals in the state.

4-H Livestock Ambassador Shortcourse

The 2012 4-H Livestock Ambassador Short Course will be held on the campus of Texas A&M University July 16-19. Twenty-five youth, ages 14 and older (at time of short course), will be selected through an application process to attend the training.

The Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador Program will equip youth with the knowledge and skills to become ambassadors for Texas AgriLife Extension Service, the Texas 4-H program and animal science as it relates to livestock projects. The Short Course will be college level animal science curriculum. It will take an in-depth look at sheep, goat, swine and cattle production in Texas and how it relates to the show ring.

Upon conclusion of the short course, ambassadors will be required to log at least 20 hours of service annually helping novice 4-H members with their livestock projects and by educating fellow 4-H members on various livestock topics. For more information and registration information, click here.

4-H Livestock Mentor Program

Attention all 4-H Volunteers! Are you wanting to take a more active role in your 4-H club’s livestock projects? Do you want to learn more about the many opportunities available through 4-H livestock projects? Then the 4-H Livestock Mentor Program might just be for you.

The primary goal of the 4-H livestock mentor program is to help provide new and/or inexperienced 4-H families the additional support they need to be successful in reaching their goals. The mentor program is designed to help improve the retention of 4-H members in the livestock program and may also serve as a tool to promote and grow participation. Most new 4-H livestock feeders need more assistance and closer supervision than agents are able to provide. 4-H livestock mentors provide 4-Hers and families the additional support needed through individual consultation, project visits, workshops, clinics and other learning opportunities.

If you are interested in becoming a 4-H Livestock Mentor, please contact Richard Parrish at the Extension Office for more information. The 4-H Livestock Mentor training will be held on June 22-23 in Fredericksburg. Training topics will include beef, swine, sheep, goat, rabbit, and poultry. This will be a fantastic training opportunity for adult volunteer leaders!

Poultry Institute

The Texas A&M Poultry Science Department along with the Poultry Science Club and Poultry Science Aggie Leadership Council will sponsor the 2012 TAMU Poultry Institute for Youth. The institute will be held on the Texas A&M University campus. The dates are Sunday, June 17 through Tuesday, June 19, 2012. The purpose of the program is to give high school students with an interest in learning about the poultry industry a chance to gain firsthand knowledge. They will have the opportunity to meet both Texas A&M staff and Texas poultry industry leaders. A portion of the institute will also include hands on work with birds and areas of leadership. National 4-H Congress

The 2012 National 4-H Congress will be Nov. 22-27 in Atlanta. National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the National 4-H program. Each year a National Design Team of Extension educators, 4-H youth, and 4-H adult volunteers analyze current youth issues and determine the most effective ways to address them. The program combines a variety of fun and exciting educational, recreational and networking opportunities. The program combines plenary sessions, seminars, discussion groups, and a service learning experience. Multi-County 4-H Photography Workshop

This multi county photography workshop, scheduled for Sat., March 31 from 9 am to 3 pm, will feature professional photographers from around the area giving presentations and training on many different aspects of photography. Photography Techniques, 4-H Photo Contest Categories, Parental Involvement in the Project will be some of the topics covered for the day, along with more! Lunch and door prizes will be provided. 4-H Clothing & Textiles Project

We will conduct the Hays County 4-H Clothing & Textiles Contests (Fashion Show, Fashion Storyboard, & Textile Show) in conjunction with County 4-H Roundup on Tue., April 3, at Buda Vo-Ag Building. Click here for more information and an entry form.

For the county clothing & textiles community service project, we will be making and donating pillows to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council (youth shelter). We invite everyone to make 12” square pillows that can serve as “comfort items” for children being housed at the shelter – many of which arrive there with nothing. You can either machine sew the seams or use fleece and knot-tie the seams. Use cute fabric for boys and girls and fill the pillows with fiberfill. To help get the project kicked off, Mrs. McDaniel with Wimberley 4-H has organized some “pillow making” sessions, and the next one will be Thur., March 22, 4:00 to 6:30 pm, at the Extension office. If you have fabric and fiber bill, bring it with you so we can make as many pillows as we can. If you have a sewing machine you can bring, please bring it with you.

Texas 4-H Roundup will be June 12-15 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Besides qualifying state contests, there are also numerous invitational events, scholarship presentations, trade show, concert, and opportunities for fellowship with other 4-H families from across Texas. Yellow Rose Fiber Producers Fiesta

Here’s a great learning experience for 4-H’ers involved in the clothing project, but also livestock projects such as llama and sheep. This "fiesta" is for spinners, knitters, weavers, felters, and other fiber arts enthusiasts. It will be Fri.-Sun., April 20-22 at the Seguin-Guadalupe County Coliseum. The event will showcase some of the best fiber. It will feature a variety of local and regional fiber producers of alpaca, sheep, buffalo, and other livestock. All are invited, from the general public interested in learning more about livestock fiber and purchasing quality fiber wares to tradesmen sharing their craft. The event is free. Food Handler’s Training Class

We have worked with the City of San Marcos to offer a Food Handler’s Training on Mon., March 26, at 6:30 pm, just prior to the 4-H Council & Adult Leaders meetings. The purpose of the class is to educate participants about proper food handling and protect the public from food borne illness. This is great for all of you working the 4-H concession stand. It is also required for anyone working in the food service industry. The 1-hr training cost $15, and your food handler card is good for 3 years.

Mary Ann Till, County 4-H Adult Leaders Association Treasurer told me that when this training was done in the past, the 4-H Adult Leaders Association paid for it. Come prepared to pay the $15 in hopes that the 4-H Adult Leaders will pay for it.

College Prep Resources

Preparing for college is not something that is limited to graduating seniors. Most guidance counselors and university admissions advisors will tell you that once students enter high school, there are many things they can and should be doing to prepare for college. Extension and 4-H are in a very unique position when it comes to post-secondary education and college preparedness. Many county and district events have valuable partnerships with colleges and universities across the state. This is a valuable way to expose young people to higher education; and in many cases, it is the only opportunity a young person may have to visit a college/university campus.

Educational programs for 4-H members and 4-H parents are a great way to help 4-H members and 4-H families prepare for college. In fact, many college admissions offices are willing to come and conduct workshops for 4-H families. One unique opportunity is to have your local college admissions office conduct a FAFSA workshop for your 4-H families. This is especially helpful for families with high school seniors need to complete a 4-H Opportunity Scholarship application. Howard College Lamb and Goat Camps

The annual Lamb and Goat Camps will be held at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas. The Lamb Camp will be held from June 10-12. The Goat Camp will be held from June 3-5. The cost for each workshop is $85 per person. Only the first 200 paid entries will be accepted.

New 4-H Recordkeeping System

The new online recordbook system - http://4hreports.com - has been launched, and 4-H members can start NOW recording project events and activities for the current 4-H year. The new recordkeeping/recordbook system includes 3 different report forms based on a member's 4-H age. The forms are designed to be age appropriate and user-friendly for youth, hoping to ease the stress and household fights among parents and their kids :o). Only the current year information is required on the forms. All the forms, an instructional guide, and short instructional videos are available.

Hays County 4-H Horse Point Shows

The second of the 2 Hays County 4-H Horse Point Shows will be held on Sat., April 28, at the Hays County Civic Center. Books open at 8:00 am, the show starts at 9:00 am. Registration will take place on the day of the show.

Just as with other events in which you participate as a 4-H member, you must be academically eligible to participate in these point shows. For all other events, we send letters to the schools to determine your academic eligibility, but for only the4-H Horse Shows (since you don’t sign up until the morning of the horse shows), you must complete the “4-H Horse Show Academic Eligibility Form.” Eligibility forms for the February show will be due to the Extension office by April 25.

With the dissolution of the District 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association, their funds will now provide scholarships to 4-H volunteers for training. So if you are looking at volunteer trainings (Volunteer Conference, Shooting Sports Coach Certification, etc.), then check the 4-H blog for an application. Each county is limited to 2 scholarships per year, and the amount given will be $100 per volunteer. Scholarships will be issued until the money is depleted.

Dripping Springs 4-H Horse Project News
Everyone, including guests, is invited to riding practice on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 4 pm at Dripping Springs Ranch Park (formerly Harrison Ranch Park). First and 3rd Sundays are instruction provided riding meetings.

Everyone is encouraged to seriously consider the benefits of attending the Texas A&M University Summer Horse Judging Camp in College Station. A couple of Hays Co. youth are already enrolled.

With the recent SALE horse judging contest under our belts, I’d like to consider our next contest. The American Paint Horse Association will hold a horse judging contest at their World Championship show, in July, in Ft. Worth, Texas. Also we should consider attending the American Jr. (Youth) Quarter Horse Association’s World Show in Ft. Worth in August. I’m looking for opportunities to learn and get competition experience. Hopefully this summer we can add a contest or two to the 2012-2013 schedule.

Did you know that 4-H has a shooting sports club? Approximately 45% of the homes in teh U.S. have firearms. Safe and responsible handling of firearms is vital to prevent accidents at home or next door. We meet twice a month, on the 3rd Thursday for the information/educational 4-H meeting an don the 3rd Sunday, at the Dahlstrom Ranch off FM 967 in Buda for 4 hours of shooting. Shooting Sports includes: Archery, Muzzle Loading, Pistol, Rifle, and Shotgun with qualified instructors for each discipline and Range Safety Officers always present. These disciplines teach safety, concentration, self-discipline, self-confidence, goal-setting, decision-making and courtesy to young people as they basic skills and build toward more advanced activities. On-Line Orientation for 4-H Volunteers

The Texas 4-H & Youth Development Program is pleased to announce the availability of an online orientation course for 4-H volunteers. The goal of this course is to provide volunteers with an understanding of the organizational structure of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and how the 4-H program operates. It also helps volunteers recognize their roles and responsibilities within the structure and program. Specifically, the course provides information on:

The course is available online at http://campus.extension.org and can be completed within one hour. If you cannot complete the orientation in one sitting, you have the capability to come back to it at a later time. Once the course is complete, you can print off a completion certificate.
